Drained is Monique Singleton’s title in the Soul’s Day Boxset. It’s the only novel written in British English as that is where she is from.
Think Beauty Peagent in a world twisted like Hunger Games, but what comes next, well, buy the boxset to find out.
Excerpt of Drained
Liam and Tia turned towards the people in the living room. The blond sat next to the one dressed in black on the deep blue sofa, her arm around the girl’s shoulders. The sobs he had heard in the background came from her. The blond was only just keeping it together herself. Slow tears made their way down from the corner of her eyes as she murmured soft comfort to her friend.
The tall brunette stood to the side, her arms around herself in an attempt at comfort. Streaks of mascara that followed the tears down her cheeks marred her beautiful face, like the red rings around her damp eyes. She leaned against the kitchen door post. The slight tremor in her long legs was another clear symptom of her distress. Liam felt a short tug of sympathy, for not only her, but for all three of the girls. He was in no doubt that they were innocent bystanders. Whatever had happened in the bedroom was unnatural, not something any of these three could have done.
Then he reminded himself that looks could deceive. Jumping to conclusions was what had gotten him in the mess last time. He admonished himself, forcing his thoughts away from that day now almost three months ago. He didn’t want to go there. Not now. Not when he was starting to pull his life back together again. He shook his head to clear his thoughts and forced himself to concentrate on the job in hand; a homicide. That was a given. No way that young woman in the bedroom died of natural causes. What the hell had killed her eluded him. He frankly had no idea. So now he would do what he did best; investigate.
Glancing at his partner he took a step forward towards the two girls sitting on the sofa. He made an effort to soften his facial features and lowered himself onto the seat opposite the girls in an attempt to make himself look less imposing. Liam was very aware of the impact he had on others. Tall, so much so that he towered over most people, with a build like a quarterback, he was acutely aware of the impression he made. People were generally wary of him, some even downright scared. It helped him in certain circumstances. This was not one of them.
